South Florida's Most Experienced & Trusted Real Estate Agency Since 1924
A.J. RYAN REALTY CELEBRATES 100 YEARS
Stepping into the 100-year-old A.J. Ryan Realty office at 34 NW 1st Avenue in Dania Beach you’re met with the history of a business that has flourished in unison with Broward’s oldest city. Photographs line the walls with images of the US-1 corridor dating back to the 1920’s with Model-A cars driving down Dania’s empty street that will one day see rows of businesses and large rental complexes.
There are pictures of Ryan family members with former presidents and vice presidents of the United States, local government officials, and community activists that steered the city through its changes over the century. John Ryan, who owns the agency today, sits at the center of history and proudly says his family has seen it all.
To celebrate the company’s 100-year anniversary, Ryan Realty invites the public to its birthday celebration barbecue at its office on August 24 from noon to 3 p.m. The company was started in 1924 by his grandfather, Archibald John “Art” Ryan, Sr., who ran it with his wife Genevieve until John took the reins in 1989. After graduating high school in 1910, Art began teaching in rural schools in Platt
County, Illinois, and served as a sergeant during World War I from 1917 until 1918. He met and married his soulmate Genevieve in 1924 and together they would create a lifelong partnership in love, and in business.
After meeting a Florida Gold Coast promoter named M.A. Hortt on their honeymoon and listening to him boast of the growing opportunities in South Florida, they packed up their belongings and settled in the City of Dania, which had been established just 20 years earlier. They built their business along what would eventually become Federal Highway, buying two lots that spanned from Us-1 (Federal Highway) to SW 1st Avenue. Art and Genevieve thrived in the city and helped make the area near their office the heart of Dania. The Dania Beach Post Office now sits to the west of it, the Dania Beach Woman’s Club, which was cofounded by Genevieve sits a bit south, with Dania Beach City Hall just one block away from what is now the oldest real estate brokerage firm in Broward County.
They were active in their community in many ways over the years, with Art serving as the president of the Florida Farm Broker Institute of the Florida Association of Realtors and serving as president of the Hollywood-South Broward Board of Realtors. He was elected to the initial Broward County Port Authority and was instrumental in its development, serving as chairman of the Port Authority for eight years.
Art became a member of the chamber of commerce in 1926 and served as its president for many years, helping other small businesses get established in the city. He was one of the founders of the Dania Bank and served as its director for many years, as well as served as the director of the First Federal Savings and Loan in Broward County During this time, Genevieve became a strong activist for women’s rights and did not sit quietly behind her husband. She helped start the city’s first library which later evolved into the Dania Woman’s Club, all while becoming a top Realtor herself. She was the first woman awarded Realtor of the Year by the Florida Realtors Association and she headed the Women’s Auxiliary after her husband helped start the American Legion Marshall La Bree Post 304 in Dania.
Art and Geneveve helped pave the city’s growth, while also growing a large family of Ryans who would make their own marks on the city. They had three children – Gene Ryan, Archibald John Ryan, Jr., and James Ryan, and 19 grandchildren. One of those grandchildren, John, has kept the legacy of the real estate office alive for nearly four decades. “I grew up playing at this office,” John Ryan said. “My grandparents were a major inspiration for me both professionally and personally.” Ryan used to pull weeds around the office as a child and watch as his grandparents got involved with everything the city had to offer. That included serving on boards of organizations that helped small businesses succeed to selling those same business owners their first home in Dania. This helped to establish Dania as a
thriving city of local business leaders and residents that merged to live, work and play into a community that has it all.
“We’ve never been a family that just exists in the city we live in,” Ryan said. “Our grandparents taught us how to embed ourselves into the community and make lasting relationships.” Those relationships have helped the real estate firm survive decades of change. “The Internet changed everything,” Ryan said. “It used to be that Realtors were needed to buy anything; we would receive a weekly book with all the listings available and people had to hire you just to know what was available.” Now, anyone looking to buy a home or move their business needs only to make a quick online search and be bombarded with thousands of listings.
“It’s more important than ever to have those relationships that make people want to call their friendly local Realtor to help find their home,” Ryan said. “It’s that personal relationship that says, I know you, I know what’s best for your family, I know the areas you are looking at to buy, and I know that area’s history.” Ryan is a part of that history and makes sure to be a part of its future. Much like his grandparents, he’s a member of local charities, such as the Dania Beach Lions Club that works to help residents in need, as well as an active member of the Greater Dania Beach Chamber of Commerce, again, finding a cohesive balance of personal and business.
“I came from a family of Realtors and lawyers,” Ryan said. “Three of my brothers, Tim, Archie, and Chris, all went into law, but I loved this part of the family business. I’m involved in the part that gets to help people on their personal journey through life; finding that dream home that’s a perfect spot to start your family, to finding that community that’s perfect to retire in.” Ryan works in the same office his
grandparents built along SW 1st Ave, having long sold the lot along US-1. His nephew A.J. Ryan IV has been working with him since 2012 and has taken following in his great-grandparent’s accomplishments to a new level as he currently serves as the mayor of Dania Beach.
“In my family you become a lawyer or a Realtor,” Mayor Ryan IV said. “I watched my uncle John and wanted to start my life straight away after college. I liked law and almost went into law school, but I’d already met Skylar, who would become my wife, and the idea of growing
in a profession that I could hit the ground running in the city I was raised in while building our family was too tempting.” Uncle and nephew sit in their office of photographs, now filled with award plaques with their own names on them, having fulfilled a prophecy Art and Genevieve could never have imagined one hundred years ago, and wonder where the future will take Ryan Realty.
“I love the change that’s happening to Dania Beach,” John Ryan said. “I’ve watched it change and grow and I see the care my nephew and next generation put into it, but I also know the care that went into establishing this as a city people want to live in, and I will continue to sell that dream.”
